Were you able to get pictures of the adults? According to the map on this page (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Yellow-crowned_Night-Heron/lifehistory), it would be unusual for the Yellow Crowned Night Heron to nest in North Georgia. Though after finding some pictures of the chicks, they are very similar, so it could be.

I don;t think those are green herons. I had a good look at the adults one day and believe they might be "yellow-crowned night heron." Also consider "black-crowned night heron."

We were traveling south on I-85 (just north of Duluth) on Saturday around 2 pm and a small black bear jumped over the barrier and out onto the highway. He looked startled at all the traffic and then jumped back over the barrier. Poor thing, I hope he didn't get hurt!

You are quite welcome, and thanks again to Robert for the e-mail tip to find them.
I was glad to see they were still there today. I got some decent pictures that I will put up tomorrow, but with the sun directly above the colors are washed out. Since herons generally nest in the same spot year after year, it is possible we will see an increase in the number of birds in that spot next spring.
This is the first Green Heron nest I've seen, but I've visited Heron Island on Lake Hartwell (GA, SC border) where there are almost a hundred birds between two islands. With the dead pine trees and nests, the islands almost look prehistoric.

Hey Jeff,
I work off of Keith Bridge road, east of the GA 400, and would like to run the Greenway while on my way home to NE Cobb County. I've run the Alpharetta portion of the Greenway before (YMCA at North Point Parkway), but wanted to know how to get to a parking area, or commercial parking lot, that would be near the Forsyth Greenway on my way home, going south on GA 400. Any suggestions?

Jeff, do you know what is happening with all the cutting of the trees along Kimball Bridge and also that huge swath of clear cutting from behind Alpharetta HS to the offices? It's so upsetting for those of us who expect to find some tranquillity and solace on the Greenway.

Any insights you have would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Jeff
The Big Creek Greenway is a great park resource for Forsyth. However, it looks like not nearly enough parking or Greenway access points are available. Sunday 02/20 the Bethelview trailhead was full and cars parked up and down the road on the shoulders of Bethelview. Also cars were parked on the shoulder where Castleberry intersects Hwy 9. I think it is just a matter of time before we have an accident with people trying to create parking spaces. As spring arrives this situation will just get worse.

I live in Vickery and have tried riding my bike the 1-mile to where the Greenway intersects Majors road. Unfortunately the cars do not abide by the 35 mph speed limit and I did not feel safe. There is lots of parking at the Vickery Village. Do you know if anyone has looked at a walking/bike path from Vickery, down Majors Road to the Greenway? This one-mile stretch has a nice wide shoulder that would easily accommodate a walking/bike path. This seems to be a very cost effective way to add parking and access to the Greenway.

Please let me know your thoughts, and whom you might suggest I contact about adding access to the Greenway from Vickery.

Cheers

There are lots of websites for creating custom running and biking routes. Many of these sites work with Google Maps, but there isn't an easy way to create a route that uses the Big Creek Greenway because the satellite images were taken prior to this project. What would be nice is to have a custom route on Google Maps that follows the completed phases. At least it would be easier than trying to guess the path and distances. An easy way to do this would be to create a file (in Google Earth) that could be uploaded to Google Maps (filetype: .kml or .kmz).
