Alpharetta Greenway Open Again Near Kimball Bridge Road

The Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway is open again at Kimball Bridge Road. The trail now passes under the new bridge and does not require crossing Kimball Bridge at the light.

Alpharetta Greenway Closing South of Kimball Bridge on July 26th

Kimball Bridge Construction Detour

The Alpharetta portion of the Big Creek Greenway will be closed just South of Kimball Bridge while construction is completed on the new bridge and utilities are installed. The closure will take place from July 26th through September 30th. This will only be a small section of the greenway, but will force a detour on anyone wanting to continue South of Rock Mill Park or North of Haynes Bridge. A portion of the trail will still be open North of Haynes Bridge, but the closure will not allow continuing past Kimball Bridge. The length of the detour is 1.3 miles, replacing 1.8 miles of the trail from Haynes Bridge to Kimball Bridge. There are sidewalks available for the entire length, but it does require crossing some busy intersections. Please make sure you use the crosswalks and follow the lights.

Detour when heading South from Rock Mill Park:
From Rock Mill Park you can follow the sidewalks on Kimball Bridge West to North Point Parkway. Follow North Point Parkway South to Georgia Lane. Take Georgia Lane to Haynes Bridge which will lead back to the trail at Haynes Bridge.

Detour when heading North from Haynes Bridge:
Take the split in the trail that heads to the Haynes Bridge parking area. From the parking area head West on Haynes Bridge. Turn right on Georgia Lane. Turn right again on North Point Parkway heading North. Use the crosswalk when you get to Kimball Bridge and then head East on Kimball Bridge.

Update on the Greenway Connection

End of the current Forsyth Big Creek Greenway at McFarland Parkway

ForsythNews.com just published an article with some more details on plans to connect the Forsyth and Alpharetta segments of the Big Creek Greenway. The connection of the two trails, in addition to further expansion into Forsyth County, would create a continuous trail system spanning 35 miles from Roswell into Cumming. The recent extension of the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway to Marconi Drive brought the trails .85 miles closer to that goal.

According to Tim Allen, Forsyth County assistant director of engineering, the construction could start in 2012 and be completed in spring of 2013.

Alpharetta Greenway to Marconi Drive Extension Complete

Marconi Extension

The extension of Big Creek Greenway north to Marconi Drive is now complete. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 10:00 am today at the small parking lot on Marconi. This is currently the northern most access to the Fulton County portion of the trail. The new extension adds an addition .85 miles to the Alpharetta section of the Greenway, bringing its total length to approximately 8 miles.

This completes the first step in connecting the Forsyth and Fulton sections of the Big Creek Greenway. No permanent plans are in place yet for completing the connection of the two trails. When the two sections are completed, there will be well over 15 miles of continuous trails through the two counties.

Trails reopen after heavy rains

3/15/2010 – Both the Alpharetta and Forsyth Big Creek Greenway trails reopened today after being closed for the weekend due to heavy rain.
